3000 - 1000 BC
Megalithic Dawn
Millennia before writing, Neolithic peoples erected sacred menhirs on the plains of Vila do Bispo. These eternal stones mark the beginning of the sacred relationship between Man and the Algarve territory.
1200 - 550 BC
Phoenician Roots
Navigators from Tyre and Sidon establish Portus Hannibalis (Portimão). The Algarve opens to Mediterranean trade, introducing wine, olive oil, and the mapping of the first southern maritime routes.
2nd C. BC - 5th C. AD
Roman Heritage
Under Roman rule, the Algarve becomes an industrial center for fish salting and salt production. Milreu and Tavira flourish with luxurious villas and infrastructure that still support our heritage today.
711 - 1249
Al-Gharb: The West
Five centuries of Islamic civilization transform the region into the 'West of Al-Andalus'. Silves becomes the capital of poetry and irrigation, bequeathing us gardens, lacy chimneys, and the name itself: Algarve.

The conquest of Faro by King Afonso III marks the definitive integration into the Portuguese Crown. The territory gains the status of 'Kingdom', a distinction that maintained its unique identity in the national context.

Birthplace of Discoveries
